Jones & Bartlett Learning Honored with 5 Book of the Year Awards for Excellence in Healthcare Publishing
The American Journal of Nursing has recognized Jones & Bartlett Learning with five Book of the Year Awards for nursing and health administration titles published in 2024. For well over a decade, Jones & Barlett Learning titles have been honored in this prestigious awards program.
Each year since 1969, the American Journal of Nursing has performed a peer review of newly published healthcare textbooks and digital resources to select three best-in-class products per category. In the 2024 Book of the Year Awards, Jones & Bartlett Learning received three first-place awards across the Adult Primary Care, Advanced Practice Nursing, and Consumer Health categories, and two second-place awards for the bestselling seventh edition of Varney’s Midwifery.
This awards competition is highly regarded by professionals, faculty, and librarians in both healthcare and academia. The recognition highlights the consistent quality and expertise that JBL authors and publishing teams demonstrate as they develop resources to prepare new healthcare professionals and support them once they are in the workforce.
Adult Care and Maternal-Child/Neonatal Nursing
Selected as the first-place winner for the category of Adult Care is Contraceptive Technology, Twenty-Second Edition by lead editors Patty Cason, Carrie Cwiak, Alison Edelman, Deborah Kowal, Jeanne M. Marrazzo, Anita L. Nelson, and Robert Hatcher (founding editor). This best-selling reference elevates awareness of new and time-honored technologies in contraception, demystifies misperceptions, provides current information, and emphasizes a person-centered approach.
The widely respected Varney’s Midwifery, Seventh Edition by Julia Phillippi and Ira Kantrowitz-Gordon was awarded second place in the categories of Adult Care and Maternal-Child/Neonatal. Varney's Midwifery has long been the trusted, must-have resource for students, professional midwives, and women's health practitioners. The Seventh Edition reflects the new ACNM Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice published in 2020, including care of transgender individuals and abortion-related care. It also provides updated information on promotion of health equity, new techniques for fetal screening, diagnosis across the lifespan, and chronic conditions in pregnancy.
Advanced Practice Nursing
In the Advanced Practice Nursing category, Zaccagnini and White’s Core Competencies Advanced Practice Nursing: A Guide for DNPs, Fifth Edition by Diane Schadewald received the first-place honor. This resource helps advanced practice nursing students understand the DNP role and achieve mastery of the revised AACN Essentials. It provides the infrastructure for those practicing with a DNP degree to achieve and sustain the highest level of practice.
Consumer Health
From JBL’s Health Administration portfolio, Basics of the U.S. Health Care System, Fifth Edition by Nancy J. Niles took home JBL’s third first-place honor, in the category of Consumer Health. This winning text covers the major concepts of healthcare operations; the role of government and public health; inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care services; payors and financing; careers; and legal and ethical issues. This new edition includes coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the global impact of the pandemic and global vaccination rates; the impact of socioeconomic factors on COVID outcomes; the disease's impact on mental health; the U.S. government role in managing the pandemic, and more.
