In the Navigate Scenario for Health Care Change Management, the student plays the role of the new Director of Social Services at the Bright Road Health Care System.  At present, Bright Road's Emergency Department is overextended due to a 30% increase in Behavioral Health patients.  In their role, the student is charged with implementing the EmPath model for psychiatric patient boarding to resolve the issue. They are given a budget of $100,000 and 25 weeks to accomplish this task. In the process, they will need to build a team and get at least 65% buy-in from the hospital and community key stakeholders. The student implements the change through a selection of 40 different decisions, each with an associated time, cost, and stakeholder buy-in. As the student moves through the simulation, they will learn along the way.

The Navigate Scenario for Health Care Change Management is divided into 4 parts:

Part 1:  The Situation

The student is introduced to the challenge they must resolve: long wait times averaging 16 hours for behavioral health patients entering the Emergency Department at the Bright Road Health Care System. They hear from the mayor, watch a news report, and meet with the hospital's CEO. They learn about the 8-step Change Management Model and the role they will play as the Director of Social Services. They are then charged with implementing a new "EmPath" model to improve performance for behavioral health patients in the Emergency Department.

Part 2:  The Stakeholders

The student is introduced to the various individuals and groups in the hospital and community who could contribute to or hinder the project. They learn about the roles of Supporters, Encouragers, Observers, and Resistors. They are introduced to 12 different characters such as Member of the Board of Trustees, Chief Financial Officer, and others, and must correctly categorize which of the four groups each character belongs to.

Part 3: The Change Management Team

The student is introduced to 12 characters-hospital staff and other community members such as Community Health Educator, Engineer, Hospitalist, and Quality Improvement Coordinator-who are possible members of the change management team. The student must correctly choose the 4 best members for the Change Management team.

Part 4:  Implement Change

The student must now implement the change through a series of 40 decisions. They must come in on or under a budget of $100,000 and 25 weeks, and a minimum of 65% key stakeholder buy-in. As the student chooses each appropriate decision, their total cost, time, and buy-in is calculated in real-time so they can see their progress.
